Update on the death of John Huynh

An update on the killing of John Huynh from UW Bothell Chancellor Wolf Yeigh and Cascadia College President Eric Muray. Huynh was killed Sunday, April 25, at an apartment complex at 112th Ave NE and Beardslee Boulevard in Bothell.

We confirmed yesterday afternoon that the suspect in Huynh’s killing, Ian Williams — whom the City of Bothell Police Department arrested that day — is a UW Bothell student and was previously a Cascadia College student. He remains in custody.

We and the entire campus community are shocked and saddened at this horrific event. Our thoughts go out to Huynh’s family and friends as they grieve his death.

足彩app哪个是正规的 City of Bothell Police continue to investigate “all possible motives” and have identified 10 witnesses and “anticipate others could be identified in the coming days.” We will provide any assistance that we can to further the investigation, and we encourage anyone with information to contact the City of Bothell Police Department.

We cannot speculate on a motive, yet the fact that Huynh was an Asian American man undoubtedly brings renewed pain for members of a community that has already been subjected to increased acts of violence and discrimination in our region and nationwide. 足彩app哪个是正规的se recent acts build on historic racism against Asians, Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders and create a climate of fear that this killing only worsens.

Members of the UW Bothell community are encouraged as needed to seek counseling or other help through our Counseling Center. UW Bothell faculty and staff can also request assistance from UW CareLink.

Our thoughts are also with all of you in this difficult moment, and we know that you join us in lifting up John Huynh’s memory and his loved ones in your hearts.

Preparing for winter weather

Dear UW Bothell community:

Even as we navigate the continuing effects of the pandemic, we must prepare for other hazards, such as winter weather. In the event of a weather or other emergency, a leadership team convenes quickly to determine the appropriate measures needed to keep the campus community safe and secure. 足彩app哪个是正规的 team includes representatives from UW Bothell Planning and Administration, Facilities & Campus Safety, Emergency Management, 足彩app哪个是正规的 Services and Marketing & Communications, as well as their counterparts from Cascadia College.

If our region experiences hazardous weather, the campus could suspend operations. If this happens, on-campus operations will be suspended, in-person instruction will be moved to remote instruction, and all campus buildings will be locked. However, all instruction and student services will continue to be offered remotely. Similarly, telework arrangements for staff will continue. Only essential employees whose work requires them to be physically present on campus should come to campus during suspended operations, observing appropriate care and safety measures.

This winter, UW Bothell and Cascadia College will have few students and personnel coming to campus. If a decision is made to suspend operations on campus, it is our intent to notify the campus community of this decision by 10 p.m. the night before.

From text and email alerts to our internal public address system, UW Bothell has a number of ways to notify the campus community about disruptions to our campus when they occur. Please take a moment now to sign up for our text and email alerts at uw.edu/alert.

Emergencies and closure information on or near campus will be communicated in a number of ways, including:

UW Bothell update on classes, finals and campus operations

Dear Campus Community,

I write to follow-up to the message sent this morning from UW President Ana Mari Cauce.

Let me begin by thanking you for your patience and perseverance in focusing on your studies and work even as we all monitor the spread of the coronavirus and take extra measures to keep ourselves, our families and communities safe.

As noted in the president’s message, starting on Monday, March 9, classes will no longer be meeting in person. For the remainder of the winter quarter, instructors are asked to conduct classes and/or exams remotely, as possible, until the quarter concludes on March 20. You can read more about this announcement online in a message from UW Provost Mark Richards.

If you have any questions about the announcement regarding classes and exams or about UW Bothell operations, please consult with your instructors, advisers or supervisors.

I also write today to call your attention to several important updates:

  • In accordance with Public Health-Seattle & King County guidance, we encourage supervisors to provide telework options to employees or students whose job duties can be performed remotely without hampering operations. Supervisors have maximum flexibility to implement this. More information can be found online about UW Bothell’s plans for instructional continuity and operational continuity.
  • We have acquired an enterprise license for Zoom videoconferencing that all UW faculty, staff and students can use to carry out their instructional, academic and administrative work. More details are available on the IT website.
  • As a precautionary measure, we are currently in the process of deep cleaning our campus buildings. This work will continue until all spaces have been completed. In addition to this deep cleaning, our facilities staff are also performing high-touch, touch-point cleaning and monitoring and refilling our wall-mounted hand sanitizer dispensers on campus throughout the day. Our custodial crew has been extra responsive to all our calls and needs, and for that we are extremely grateful. We have asked the contractors who maintain our leased spaces (Husky Hall, Beardslee Building and Beardslee Crossing) to follow the same cleaning procedures.
  • We will be replenishing the food pantries in Husky Hall and in the 足彩app哪个是正规的 Diversity Center (UW1-173) to meet our community’s needs during this time of uncertainty.
  • To learn more about anti-stigma resources that may be particularly useful at this time, please see the information developed and curated by Public Health–Seattle & King County.

In close consultation with UW leadership in Seattle and with public health officials, we will continue to track the health situation and to provide you with needed information and resources.

All faculty, staff and students are also urged to check the homepage of the UW Bothell website to find direct links to the most up-to-date information from UW in Seattle. 足彩app哪个是正规的 homepage also features a link to campus-specific resources that will be updated regularly with relevant information and instructions.

I know that there are many people all around campus who are doing amazing work day in and day out on behalf of our students and our entire UW Bothell community. As President Cauce’s message noted, “this University has faced and overcome challenges before. Working together, we will do so again.”

Thank you for your attention and participation as we all focus on serving our academic mission, continue our daily work and, as always, prioritize the safety of our students, staff and faculty.

Bjong Wolf Yeigh, Ph.D., F.ASME
Chancellor and Professor of Engineering
